Description

blutronium

This is our new 2nd generation version 2 serial to Bluetooth adapter. It is replacing the older UCBT232B and S2B2232I adapters. This new version has a new processor for better stability and performance, Bluetooth version 2.1, more functions and is more user friendly. This version has several improvements:

Parameters can be configured over BLE Bluetooth using an iOS/Android app.

One of the most noticeable improvements is that this 2nd generation version 2 adapter's parameters can now be configured over BLE Bluetooth using an app on any iOS or Android phone or tablet. The app will connect to the adapter via BLE Bluetooth and the user can then easily select which parameter to configure.
Alternatively the adapter can be configured using AT commands using a standard terminal program such as Putty or Tera Term. However this rather old fashioned way of configuration is not very user friendly, especially because it requires a USB to serial adapter to be able to connect the adapter to a PC for the user to be able to search for the right AT command to set the correct parameter.

Supports more data bits and stop bits

While older serial Bluetooth adapter usually only supports 6 and 7 data bits and 1 or 2 stop bits, this new version 2 adapter supports 5,6,7 data bits and 1, 1.5 and 2 stop bits, meaning it will be compatible with even more types of serial devices.

Easier pairing with slave adapters

This new version 2 serial Bluetooth adapter has two new functions: the 'one' command and the 'auto' command. With the 'One' command the master adapter will automatically pair with only one slave adapter, even there are multiple adapters within the same range.
The 'auto' command will allow the master adapter to automatically pair with multiple slave adapters with the same pin code.

A Versatile Wireless Solution

Using a serial to Bluetooth adapter is a fast, easy and reliable way of connecting a serial device to a PC, or to link two serial devices with each other as a direct cable replacement.
The communication range is up to 300 feet line of sight when using Class 1 Bluetooth devices, and since Bluetooth inherently has secure 128bit encryption you get a very good and secure communication link.
It will work with most devices which has a standard serial RS232 port such as serial printers, building control, scales, office equipment, alarm and security devices, telescopes (tested with ASCOM drivers under Windows with Celestron and Meade telescopes), CNC's, most manufacturing machinery and many many more types of serial devices. This adapter will also work with most Cisco routers and switches (tested with Cisco Catalyst 3560).

You can communicate with this serial Bluetooth adapter using a PC with built-in Bluetooth or by using an external USB Bluetooth dongle. The advantage of using one of these methods is that you will need only one serial Bluetooth adapter to setup a communication link with a PC.
If you need a direct cable replacement which automatically links two serial devices together without using a PC then you can use two adapters linked together as a pair.

The adapter can be powered by the included USB cable, through screw terminals or through the DB9 connector.

Each package contains one Bluetooth serial adapter which works as a full duplex transceiver, meaning it can both transmit and receive data. You will need two of these Bluetooth serial adapters to setup a communication link unless you already have a built-in or external Bluetooth dongle. Take a look at our detailed setup examples to see how this adapter can be setup.

Introduction to Serial to Bluetooth Adapter

Serial to Bluetooth adapters are often underestimated when it comes to serial RS232 connectivity. In fact, serial communication using a Bluetooth serial adapter provides the most economical, efficient, secure, and reliable wireless serial connection within a 300 feet range. This article will explore the benefits and applications of a Bluetooth serial adapter, emphasizing its versatility and security.

Understanding the benefits of a serial to Bluetooth adapter

A serial to Bluetooth adapter offers a convenient and easy way to wirelessly communicate with serial devices, whether they are new or old. With Bluetooth 2.0 and 2.1 protocols, users benefit from secure 128-bit encryption communication, ensuring data safety. These adapters are excellent all-around units for general wireless RS232 communication, making them ideal for various applications such as serial printers, building control, scales, office equipment, alarm and security devices, telescopes, CNC machines, and other manufacturing machinery.

Applications of serial to Bluetooth adapter

The Bluetooth serial adapter is incredibly versatile. It has been tested with ASCOM drivers under Windows with Celestron and Meade telescope mounts and SkySafari on Android. Additionally, it works with most Cisco routers and switches, specifically tested with the Cisco Catalyst 3560. The ability to power this adapter through multiple sources, including a USB cable, USB Mini power adapter, pin 9 at the DB9 connector, or an external battery, adds to its flexibility and ease of use.

Setting up a serial to Bluetooth adapter

Communicating with a Bluetooth serial adapter can be done via standard built-in Bluetooth or using an external USB Bluetooth dongle. One significant advantage of these methods is that only one Bluetooth serial adapter is needed to establish a communication link. For those seeking a direct cable replacement, these adapters can be used in pairs, allowing automatic wireless connections between devices without the need for a computer.

Configuring your serial to Bluetooth adapter

Configuring the parameters of a serial Bluetooth adapter is straightforward. Using a USB to serial adapter cable, such as part XS880, is recommended unless a serial COM port is available on the computer. However, these parameters can also be configured over Bluetooth if built-in Bluetooth or a USB Bluetooth dongle is used. Each package includes one Bluetooth serial adapter that functions as a full duplex transceiver, capable of both transmitting and receiving data.

Powering and connecting your serial to Bluetooth adapter

The serial to Bluetooth adapter offers multiple powering options, enhancing its versatility. It can be powered via an included USB cable, a USB Mini power adapter, pin 9 at the DB9 connector, or an external battery. This flexibility ensures that the adapter can be used in various environments and setups, making it a reliable choice for different applications.

Real-world examples of serial to Bluetooth adapter setup

To illustrate the practical applications, detailed setup examples are available. These examples demonstrate how to set up a communication link using two Bluetooth serial adapters or a combination of a Bluetooth serial adapter and a built-in or external Bluetooth dongle. This adaptability showcases the ease of integrating Bluetooth serial adapters into existing systems, providing a seamless transition to wireless communication.

The value of a serial to Bluetooth adapter

A serial to Bluetooth adapter is a valuable tool for anyone needing secure, reliable, and efficient wireless serial communication. Its broad range of applications, ease of configuration, and multiple powering options make it an indispensable device in modern serial RS232 connectivity. Whether for industrial machinery, security systems, or scientific equipment, the Bluetooth serial adapter stands out as a top choice for wireless serial communication.
