Description

This is an industrial grade fully isolated RS232 to RS485 / RS422 converter which can convert RS232 signals to balanced differential RS485 and RS422 signals in both directions.

Built-in power isolation makes sure the supply voltage is properly isolated from the signal voltage. The supply voltage is completerly isolated from the isolated terminals. This RS232 to RS485 converter also has built-in isolation for the signal lines providing error-free and clean data communication while avoiding electrical interferance, surges and voltages spikes damaging the data signal and connected equipment. The isolation also helps in preventing ground loops. Onboard TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) and ESD protection, effectively protects against surge voltages and transient peak voltages in the circuitry and provides protection against static electricity. An onboard self-recovery fuse and protection diodes, ensures a stable voltage output, and protects against over-current and overvoltages.

The serial driver chips SP3232EEN and SP485EEN ensures fast, stable and reliable communication and better compatibility with a wide varity of industrial and commercial devices and equipment with a baud rate of 300 - 921600bps.

When communicating over long communication distances, a terminal resistor can be an advantace. A 120 ohm terminal resistor can be enabled by a jumper located above the screw terminals.

LED indication lights for Power and the TX / RX signals indicates when data is transmitted or received, which is a great help when troubleshooting a setup.

As a true industrial grade converter, this RS232 to RS485 converter has a wide input voltage range of 5V - 36V DC.

Generally about RS232 to RS485 Converters

What is a RS232 to RS485 Converter?

A RS232 to RS485 converter is a device that bridges the gap between RS232 and RS485 communication standards, enabling seamless data transfer between devices with different serial interfaces. Widely used in industrial and commercial environments, these converters facilitate the connection of RS232 ports to RS485 ports, allowing for efficient communication over longer distances and in multi-drop network configurations. This capability is crucial for maintaining robust and reliable data exchange in various applications, from factory automation to building management systems.

Technical Details

RS232 to RS485 Circuit Schematic

The circuitry of a typical RS232 to RS485 converter includes a dedicated RS232 to RS485 converter chip and an RS485 transceiver. The converter chip is responsible for transforming the RS232 signal into an RS485 signal, while the transceiver handles the transmission and reception of the RS485 signal. To ensure proper signal transmission and safeguard against static electricity and high voltage spikes, the circuit may also incorporate resistors, capacitors, and diodes. These components work together to maintain signal integrity and protect the converter from electrical disturbances.

Connecting a RS232 to RS485 Converter

Connecting a RS232 to RS485 converter involves linking a device with an RS232 port to another with an RS485 port. The converter can either draw power directly from the RS232 data line (port powered) or require an external power supply (externally powered). When setting up the connection, it is essential to configure the RS232 device to transmit data at the correct baud rate and ensure that the RS485 device is set to receive data at the same rate. This alignment is critical for achieving reliable communication between the devices.

Termination and Wiring

For long-distance communication, typically over 1000 feet, adding a termination resistor (usually 120 ohms) to the RS485 node can prevent signal reflections and ensure data integrity. However, this increases power consumption. Proper wiring and termination techniques are vital for maintaining reliable communication. Terminal blocks and dip switches are often used to configure the converter and establish secure connections between devices, ensuring a stable and efficient data transfer process.
