Description

Industrial grade mini USB to RS485 adapter similar to our part MWE820A, the difference between the two is that this converter has industrial grade specifications, with working temperatures from -40 to +85 degree Celsius. The housing is made of hardened ABS plastic with a reinforced terminal header for easy connection of communication wires. Both supports RS485 and RS422, making it ideal for industrial and commercial applications.

For industrial environments, using an isolated USB version is beneficial due to its resistance to voltage spikes and noise, making it essential in scenarios where electrical interference is a concern.

This USB to RS485 adapter is electrically protected against static electricity, high voltage spikes and other dangerous voltage spikes which can damage your equipment or data signaling. This protection is accomplished by four TVS’s (Transient Voltage Suppressors), one for each data line.

Power for this converter is provided from the USB port so there is no need for an external power supply. It is designed around the high performance and very reliable FT232RL processor chip from FTDI, so it is fully compatible with all versions of Windows, Mac and Linux.

This particular USB to RS485 adapter is designed mainly for industrial environments but is also suitable for most other applications including any general office, commercial and laboratory environment.

It is a bi-directional, (meaning it communicates in both directions) and reliable converter that easily lets you connect any RS485 or RS422 device directly to your computer’s USB port, efficiently converting USB signals to half-duplex RS485 or full-duplex RS422 and vice versa.

After installation of the included drivers the virtual COM port will automatically show up in your computer’s Device Manager and can be accessed as if it was a standard built-in COM port.

The RS485 / RS422 end is a standard 5-screw terminal header for easy connection of single wires. Automatic send data control is enabled by default so no external flow or handshake control is needed.

Terminal Block and DB9 Connectors for Secure Connections

One of the standout features of USB to RS485 converters is the inclusion of terminal block and DB9 connectors, which provide secure and reliable connections. The terminal block connector allows for straightforward and secure attachment to RS485 devices, ensuring that the connection is stable and less prone to disconnection or data loss. This is particularly important in industrial environments where vibrations and other physical disturbances can affect connections.

On the other end, the DB9 connector ensures a secure connection to the computer’s USB port. This dual-connector design minimizes the risk of data loss or corruption, providing a robust solution for connecting RS485 devices to modern computing systems. By using these secure connectors, users can be confident that their data transfer processes will be reliable and uninterrupted.

Choosing the Right Adapter

When selecting a USB to RS485 adapter, several factors must be considered, including:

  • Environmental noise levels: In high-noise environments, an optically isolated converter is recommended.

  • Data transfer rate: The converter should be able to handle the required data transfer rate.

  • Operating system compatibility: Ensure the adapter is compatible with your computer’s operating system.

  • Power requirements: Consider an adapter that does not require external power.

  • Cable length: Choose an adapter with a suitable cable length for your application.

  • USB to RS422 adapter: For applications requiring RS422 connections, consider a USB to RS422 adapter. This small electronic device converts USB signals to RS422, facilitating connections between devices lacking RS422 ports and personal computers with USB ports. Various models are available for different settings.

Industrial and Commercial Applications

USB to RS485 adapters are widely used in industrial settings, including:

  • Factory automation systems

  • Process control systems

  • Building automation

  • Industrial control systems

  • Motor drives

  • Other automation devices

USB to RS422 adapters are also commonly used in industrial applications to connect devices lacking RS422 ports to computers via USB.

These adapters ensure seamless communication and control across extensive networks, making them an essential tool for modern industrial applications.

Setup and Installation

Setting up and installing a USB to RS485 adapter or USB converter is a straightforward process. Simply connect the adapter to your computer’s USB port and the RS485 device to the adapter’s terminal block. Install the drivers provided with the adapter, and configure the virtual COM port settings. The adapter is now ready to use, providing a reliable and efficient means of data transfer between your computer and RS485 devices.

If you encounter issues, consider using an RS422 adapter for specific troubleshooting steps, especially when dealing with devices that require RS422 signals.

Troubleshooting Common Issues and Errors

When using a USB to RS485 converter, users may occasionally encounter common issues and errors. To troubleshoot these problems effectively, it is essential to start by checking the converter’s settings and configuration. Ensure that the converter is properly connected to both the RS485 device and the computer’s USB port. Loose or incorrect connections are often the primary cause of communication issues.

Next, verify that the converter’s drivers and software are up-to-date and compatible with your operating system. Outdated or incompatible drivers can lead to communication failures or erratic behavior. If the problem persists, consult the user manual for specific troubleshooting steps or contact the manufacturer’s support team for assistance. By following these steps, users can resolve most common issues and ensure smooth operation of their USB to RS485 converters.

Comparison with Other Serial Adapters

USB to RS485 converters offer several advantages over other serial adapters, making them a preferred choice for many users. These converters provide high-speed data transfer rates, which are essential for applications requiring quick and reliable communication. Additionally, their compatibility with various USB ports, including USB 2.0, ensures that they can be easily integrated with modern computing devices.

The secure connections provided by terminal block and DB9 connectors further enhance their reliability, reducing the risk of data loss or corruption. Moreover, USB to RS485 converters are easy to install and configure, making them ideal for both industrial and commercial applications. These features collectively make USB to RS485 converters a versatile and efficient solution for connecting RS485 devices to modern computers.

Comparison with RS232 to RS485 Converters

While both USB to RS485 and RS232 to RS485 converters serve the purpose of connecting devices with different communication protocols, there are significant differences between the two.
