This serial to Wi-Fi converter is our most advanced and solid converter available of this type. Not only does it have a RS232 interface but also RS485 and RS422 interfaces. The RS232 is a standard DB9 port and the RS485 / RS422 are screw terminal headers for easy connection of single wires.
It supports communication protocols for most modern wireless communication with many types of machinery such as CNC machines, weighing scales, laboratory equipment, printers, factory automation and most other industrial applications.
The processor in this serial to Wi-Fi converter is a Ralink RT5350F employing Ralink's 2nd generation 802.11n technologies for longer range
and better throughput. The embedded, high performance CPU can easily manage advanced applications such as Wi-Fi data processing without overloading the host processor. The eCos operating system provides a strong platform supporting TCP/IP, Telnet and Modbus TCP Protocols in STA, AP, AP+STA modes.
Besides supporting all standard basic functions such as baud rates between 300 and 230400bps, AP and STA network modes, RS232, RS485 and RS422 interfaces, DHCP support, AES security it also supports more advanced functions. Here are some of the advanced functions (please refer to the datasheet for all details):
- Two ports - WiFi and Ethernet
This converter can be accessed and communicate either over Wi-Fi or over the built-in Ethernet port. The wired Ethernet port can for example be used as a backup connection if the Wi-Fi link for some reason goes down.
- Modbus compatible.
Industrial applications often use the Modbus protocol to communicate with serial devices. This converter is fully compatible with the ModBus TCP and RTU protocols.
- Telnetd
Using standard Telnetd the converter can be accessed and communicate over a Telnet connection. Many network administrators prefer this
method instead of web-access.
- Multiple TCP Sockets support
This converter can support up to 5 TCP sockets. Each socket can communicate individually over TCP/UDP. Multi Socket simultaneous communication of data stream is as following.
- Multiple Clients Support.
Each serial port supports up to 8 simultaneous clients in TCP mode, meaning that 8 computers can connect to the converter at the same time. This is a nice feature to have if you have a large network with many clients.
- Configuration over serial (CLI)
The converter's parameters can be configured through the serial RS232 port using CLI commands. Useful if configuration through Wi-Fi or Ethernet is not an option.
- Other Special Functions:
Just to mention a few of the minor features:
- Wide power range 5 - 36VDC
- Adjustable number of simultaneous clients acceptable (max 32)
- HTTP support
- Route Configuration. The data received from Socket channel can be set to another socket channel
- NTP function
- Adjustable TCP socket Keep Alive
- Adjustable TCP socket Timeout
- Hardware flow control RTS/CTS
- Software flow control XON/XOFF
- Adjustable buffer size and gap time
- MAC address
- Adjustable timeout counter
Please see the datasheet and user manual for more details.
Besides the features mentioned above this converter is also fully capable of handling more complex setups such as Serial Tunneling mode, communication without virtual COM software, access over Internet and more.
