If you need to isolate your USB device from your computer this USB Isolator is an effective and easy solution to ensure total isolation between your USB devices and your computer. This optical USB Isolator separates both the data lines and power supply from your computer, fully protecting your USB devices and data signals against electrical noise, high voltage spikes, surges and ground loops for up to 3.75kV, which otherwise easily could damage your equipment.

Optical isolation is achieved by two dual channel HCPL-2630 optocouplers from Fairchild Semiconductors, which efficiently protects your equipment against all types of high voltage spikes, surges and static electricity and makes this unit compatible with both USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 devices at USB 1.1 speeds.
The USB isolator gets its working power from the external power supply so even if you don't need a fully powered USB port the external power supply is still required for the isolator to work.

The USB Isolator

A USB isolator is highly recommended when you plan to connect a sensitive or expensive USB device to your computers USB port, if you suspect that there are possibilities for voltage spikes or surges in your USB cable or if you need to use an extended USB cable. These are situations where a USB isolator will protect your computer and USB device against most kinds of electrical noise, voltage spikes, surges and ground loops.

A standard USB isolator is very easy to use, simply connect it to your computer\'s USB port and then connect your USB device to the USB isolator. Some USB isolator units are powered by your computer\'s USB port, other USB isolator units are powered by an external power supply. We highly recommend a USB isolator which uses an external power supply. By using an external power supply the USB isolator not only isolates the data wires but also the power wires in the USB cable. Isolating the power wires gives better protection of you computer and USB device since it eliminates the chance for damage by voltage spikes in the power supply.

Another important feature of a USB isolator is that it should be compatible with both USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 device, this gives you the best compatibility for most devices. Most USB isolator units uses optical isolators to isolate the data signals. Along with the USB signal processor, the optical isolator is the main components in a USB isolator. When choosing a USB isolator we recommend a USB isolator with brand name processor chips such as Toshiba or Maxim.
