Quick Tip!

Setting up a RS232 to Ethernet converter.

Using and setting up a RS232 to Ethernet converter is a fairly easy task, however it is an advantage to be familiar with computers and network settings. To setup a RS232 to Ethernet converter the first thing you need is to do is to assign a static IP address for your computer. This is needed for the RS232 to Ethernet converter to be able to connect to your computer.

After you have assigned a static COM port for your computer you need to install the included virtual COM port software. This software creates a virtual COM port in your computer which the RS232 to Ethernet converter can use. This virtual COM port can be found in your computers Device Manager. The virtual COM port software is usually available for all version of Windows, Linux and in some cases Mac.
After you have installed the virtual COM software for the RS232 to Ethernet converter you connect it to your computer with a standard Ethernet cable, it can be either a cross-over or straight-through cable. Then you connect the power supply. To check if you have connected the RS232 to Ethernet converter correctly you can now enter the IP address of the RS232 to Ethernet converter in your browsers address bar and press Enter. This should now take you to the RS232 to Ethernet converters Admin page. If you dont see this page something has gone wrong while setting up and connecting the RS232 to Ethernet converter.
The virtual COM software is now ready to search for the RS232 to Ethernet converter. Simply click the Search button and the software will search for the RS232 to Ethernet converter. Once the software finds the RS232 to Ethernet converter, it usually only takes a few seconds, you can create the virtual COM port by clicking the Create COM port button. If the COM port has been successfully created you should now be able to go to your computers Device Manager and find the created COM port. If you cant see the port in Device Manager then usually it has not been created successfully, and you need to check yor setup.
Most RS232 to Ethernet converter units basically works the same way, creating a virtual COM port by software, however you can also use the RS232 to Ethernet converter without virtual COM port software. If you wish to use the RS232 to Ethernet converter without software your software needs to be able to specify the IP address of the RS232 to Ethernet converter whereby you then can send data to the RS232 to Ethernet converter this way and it will convert all in and out coming data.
